PROTECT YOUR KNEES: HYALURONIC ACID AND PLASMA TO IMPROVE YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE

Knee wear, also known as knee osteoarthritis, is a degenerative disease that affects the joint cartilage and the tissues around it. As it progresses, it causes pain, stiffness and decreased mobility. For those looking for safe alternatives with high scientific evidence to conventional treatments, such as painkillers and anti-inflammatories; today there are two options that have gained popularity in the last two years: viscosupplementation and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) . Both procedures have the potential to relieve symptoms and improve the quality of life of patients.
WHAT IS VISCOSUPPLEMENTATION?
It is a minimally invasive procedure that involves injecting hyaluronic acid directly into the knee joint. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that is naturally found in joint fluid, acting as a lubricant and shock absorber . However, in patients with knee wear, the amount of hyaluronic acid may be high or low and may also be a poor quality fluid. This affects mobility, causing friction, pain and inflammation of the joint.

HOW IS IT DONE?
It begins with an ultrasound scan to observe the inside of the joint. If an excess of inflammatory synovial fluid is observed, it is aspirated using a fine needle, and then hyaluronic acid is applied to the knee to restore the viscoelastic properties of the synovial fluid. In this way, pain is reduced and joint function is improved .
This treatment is especially useful in early and moderate stages of wear, where there is still cartilage to protect. Viscosupplementation not only has lubricating effects, but has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties.
USE OF PLATELET-RICH PLASMA (PRP).
Viscosupplementation can be complemented by the application of platelet-rich plasma. This is obtained by taking a blood sample from the patient and centrifuging it in a special machine that allows the blood components to be separated, thus obtaining platelet-rich plasma with low leukocytes.
It is a process brief , in which the patient does not have to invest more than 15 minutes for its preparation and application, on the same day. It is applied in the doctor’s office, without the need for special care and allowing the patient to continue with their daily activities.
BENEFIT FOR YOUR KNEES
1. Pain reduction. Both treatments can reduce joint pain. Viscosupplementation works primarily by improving joint lubrication, while PRP stimulates cell repair processes that can help reduce joint tenderness.
2. Improve joint function. By reducing pain and improving mobility, these treatments allow for greater knee functionality. This is particularly important for those seeking to resume physical or work activities that are limited by pain and stiffness.
3. Reduction of inflammation. Hyaluronic acid has anti-inflammatory properties, and PRP, having a lower number of leukocytes, reduces inflammation secondary to the injection. This allows both treatments to be well tolerated and reduces the risk of adverse effects.
4. Stimulation of cartilage repair. Although cartilage repair in advanced osteoarthritis is limited, PRP has shown promising results in promoting cartilage repair in early and intermediate stages. Growth factors released by platelets can stimulate cartilage cells to regenerate and thus improve the quality of joint tissue.
5. Delayed surgical intervention. They provide symptom relief and improve quality of life. The need for surgical intervention, such as a knee replacement, can be significantly delayed and, in some cases, together with general patient measures, can even be avoided.
A schedule of one to three applications is generally recommended, with intervals of one week or even months, depending on the degree of wear and tear and the response in reducing the patient’s symptoms.
