WHAT IS EXPLANTATION?

It is the removal of an implant from the body that can be made of any material, there are various causes such as the rejection of the foreign body, an infection, aesthetic discomfort or that is causing some adjuvant disease, which may have been detected by the patient, the doctor or by the health authority who in this case may request that it be removed from the market and recommend that patients go to their doctor to receive information about an explantation.
Since 2011, it was described that all metal or silicone implants have the potential to cause an abnormal immune response called Adjuvant-Induced Autoimmune Syndrome (ASIA), which causes different signs and symptoms such as muscle pain, arthritis, fatigue, fever, memory loss, etc. And they are resolved with the removal of said implants.
Since 2011, importance has been given to Anaplastic Giant Cell Lymphoma associated with silicone implants; the health authority requested the withdrawal (recall) of a type of textured implant from a brand in 2016 and another French brand for not using medical grade silicone, and recommended that patients pay attention if a fluid collection occurs after a long time (seroma), lumps (nodes) or any other finding that alerts them to go to the doctor for review and studies. This means that there is NO URGENCY to remove them.

What should I do if I have to or want to have an explantation?
The most important thing is to be very well informed with your Certified Plastic Surgeon and make the decision to only remove them or if it is necessary to perform an adjunctive procedure such as removal of the capsules and liquid for study, some therapy and some surgical technique that provides a satisfactory aesthetic result, such as a breast lift (pexy) or lipoinjection.
