REMISSION OF DISEASES ASSOCIATED WITH OBESITY

Can bariatric surgery help me reverse metabolic diseases?

Bariatric surgery has proven to be an effective tool not only for weight loss but also for improving multiple obesity-related health conditions. Below, we explore the conditions that can be significantly improved with this procedure.

1. Type 2 diabetes
One of the most striking effects of bariatric surgery is its ability to improve type 2 diabetes. The weight loss and metabolic changes induced by surgery can improve insulin sensitivity and blood sugar regulation, allowing many patients to reduce or eliminate the need for medication.

2. High blood pressure
Body weight reduction decreases vascular resistance and improves heart function, which can lead to normal blood pressure. Many patients experience a reduction in the need for antihypertensive medications after surgery.

3. Sleep apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea, a condition in which breathing is repeatedly interrupted during sleep, is closely linked to obesity. Bariatric surgery can reduce the amount of fatty tissue in the throat, improving breathing function and reducing or eliminating sleep apnea.

4. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
Fat accumulation in the liver can lead to inflammation and liver damage. Bariatric surgery, by promoting weight loss and improving insulin sensitivity, can help reverse or control the progression of this disease.

5. Metabolic syndrome
This syndrome includes abdominal obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and abnormal lipid and cholesterol levels. Metabolic surgery, a variant of bariatric surgery, aims not only to reduce weight but also to improve these conditions.

6. Infertility
Obesity can affect fertility in both men and women. Bariatric surgery helps regulate ovulation in women and improves sperm quality in men, increasing the chances of conception.

7. Risk of certain types of cancer
Obesity is linked to an increased risk of colon, breast, endometrial, kidney, and liver cancer. Bariatric surgery, by reducing excess weight and improving metabolic health, can reduce these risks.

Recommended procedures:
While it’s said that significant weight loss will improve our health, there are several ways to achieve this:
– Gastric Sleeve Surgery
– Gastric Bypass

Which one do I qualify for if I have obesity and associated diseases such as those already mentioned?
If you have a body mass index of 30 to 45, you are most likely a candidate for Gastric Sleeve surgery. However, your case must be closely evaluated in an in-person assessment.
On the other hand, if you’re 46 or older and have diabetes and/or persistent reflux, an evaluation accompanied by an endoscopic examination would be necessary. We’ll examine your stomach to rule out any impediments to surgery. However, in most cases, medical treatment is performed or initiated beforehand.
