MODELING DISEASE

It is a recurring and worrying case that has been occurring for many years: the injection of various substances as body shapers , ranging from oils, fat-burning preparations, animal fats, silicone (biopolymers), methyl methacrylate (bone cement), among others.

It is currently considered a public health problem due to the emergence of quack doctors or untrained individuals who irresponsibly inject these harmful substances. Some of them have immediate consequences, while others have long-term consequences.

Let’s remember that these cases become relevant when they happen to public figures or artists, as was the case with Alejandra Guzmán. However, they are soon forgotten, and cases increase again among the population. This problem ignores social status, nationality, or, sometimes, educational level, so we will address the issue to inform people about the risks.

First of all, we must be clear that any injected substance or material that is foreign to the body will be identified by the body as a foreign element. Therefore, the body will attempt to destroy and expel it, which can cause infections, necrosis (tissue death), inflammatory reactions with various symptoms, and even death.

In other cases, the body encapsulates the material, and it can take decades for it to cause damage. This is especially true with injected silicone or biopolymers, marketed under various names such as ” biogel .” Damage can include changes in skin color, hardening, and the formation of granulomas and fistulas, causing a cosmetic catastrophe that, in some cases, has even led to patient suicide.

The most serious is the development of a reaction known as modeling disease , adjuvant disease or ASIA syndrome (Autoimmune Syndrome). Induced by Adjuvants or Adjuvant-Induced Autoimmune Syndrome), in which the immune system attacks structures such as the skin, joints and, more seriously, the kidneys, which can lead to kidney failure and the need for dialysis.

Treatment should begin as soon as possible, preferably before symptoms appear, and focuses on removing the product using laser liposuction, when feasible, or removing all infiltrated tissue en bloc, sparing the muscles. An established protocol (such as that of the General Hospital of Mexico) should be followed to minimize symptoms, protect the kidney, and facilitate removal of the material.

It’s important to note that the only injections that can be used to increase volume or correct irregularities are hyaluronic acid, as the body can naturally break it down. For this reason, periodic re-injection is required.

I remind you to always consult a certified and ethical plastic surgeon. Take care of your health and do not inject ANYTHING that is not registered and authorized by the FDA, the European Union, and COFEPRIS, and that is not administered in an appropriate location and with the necessary hygiene measures.
