BREATHING WELL STARTS WITH A WELL-DEFINED DIAGNOSIS
Persistent cough, wheezing, fatigue during exercise, or the sensation of not being able to fully fill the lungs should never be considered normal. They also should not be treated solely with syrups or inhalers without a proper evaluation.
Breathing well is the result of an appropriate assessment and a well-defined diagnosis.
In conditions such as asthma, the difference between being well controlled and living with frequent symptoms often depends more on how the problem is studied than on the medication prescribed.
Not All Respiratory Tests Are the Same
Performing a respiratory test does not guarantee that it is done correctly. The real difference lies in how the test is performed and how it is interpreted. This is where pulmonary physiology becomes essential.
Pulmonary physiology is a highly specialized medical field dedicated to evaluating how the lungs truly function. Due to the level of training and experience required, its practice is limited nationwide, making it essential to know who is conducting and interpreting respiratory functional evaluations.
A STRUCTURED APPROACH, NOT AN IMPROVISED ONE
Modern respiratory evaluation is not based on a single test or on random decisions. It requires the integration of studies such as spirometry, fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) measurement, and impulse oscillometry, always within the clinical context of each patient and guided by a clear physiological criterion.
ASTHMA SPECIALIST, PULMONARY FUNCTION SPECIALIST
Respiratory studies should not be viewed as isolated tests.
They must be integrated with the patient’s medical history, physical examination, and clinical evolution in order to truly add value.
As a co-author of the Mexican Integrated Asthma Management Guideline (MIA 2.0), my practice is based on current, evidence-based recommendations, with a focus on:
- Accurate functional diagnoses
- Individualized treatments
- Objective follow-up beyond symptoms
All aimed at fewer exacerbations, fewer emergency visits, and a better quality of life.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HAVING TESTS AND DOING THEM RIGHT
In respiratory medicine, doing things right from the beginning saves time and frustration.
A well-defined diagnosis prevents unnecessary treatments and years of uncertainty for patients and their families.
