YOUR INTIMATE HEALTH IS A PRIORITY
Choose the contraceptive method that’s right for you with the help of your gynecologist.
Choosing a contraceptive method is not a decision to take lightly. There are multiple options, and the most suitable one will depend on several factors such as your age, medical history, whether you want a temporary or long-term method, whether you prefer to avoid hormones, among others. That’s why it’s important to have guidance from your gynecologist or a trusted healthcare professional.
Below are the main options available:
Hormonal Methods
These methods release hormones (such as estrogen and progestin) to prevent ovulation, thicken cervical mucus, and make the endometrium less receptive to pregnancy. They are effective, and some also help regulate menstrual cycles or control symptoms such as acne.
Birth control pills
Taken daily, they require consistency to maintain effectiveness. Some are combined (estrogen and progestin) and others contain only progestin.
Subdermal implant
A small rod placed under the skin of the arm. It continuously releases progestin and protects for up to 3 years.
Contraceptive patch
Applied to the skin and changed weekly. It releases hormones similar to those in combined pills.
Hormonal injections
Administered every month or every three months, depending on the type. They are practical and effective if given on schedule.
Hormonal IUD (Mirena or similar)
A small device placed in the uterus that releases progestin locally. It lasts between 3 and 7 years, depending on the model.
Non-Hormonal Methods
These methods do not alter the body’s hormonal balance, making them ideal for people who cannot or prefer not to use hormones.
Copper IUD
An intrauterine device that releases small amounts of copper, preventing sperm from reaching the egg. It can last up to 10 years.
Silver IUD
Works similarly to the copper IUD, but includes silver to reduce inflammation and increase biocompatibility. It has a similar lifespan.
Mini IUD (copper or silver)
Smaller versions of traditional IUDs, ideal for young women, nulliparous women (those who haven’t had children), or women with smaller uterine cavities.
Remember: the best method is the one that suits you.
Every body and lifestyle is different. That’s why the most important thing is that the chosen method is safe, effective, comfortable, and in line with your personal and health needs. Don’t make decisions based solely on general recommendations; consult your gynecologist to find the ideal option for you.
Take care of your intimate health, get informed, and choose wisely.
Your well-being starts with knowing your options.
