THE ABCs TO KNOW IF YOUR CHILD HAS ASTHMA

Asthma is one of the most common respiratory diseases in children. International guidelines recommend three very clear steps — the ABCs of diagnosis.

A for Attention to Symptoms

  • Nighttime coughing or coughing when running
  • Wheezing (“whistling”) in the chest
  • Shortness of breath or easy fatigue
  • Chest tightness (feeling of breathlessness)

👉 If these symptoms are recurrent, asthma is suspected.

B for Blockage Detection
Through a spirometry or impulse oscillometry test, doctors can measure whether the bronchi are obstructed.
If there is improvement after administering medication, the disease can be confirmed, leading to the third step — the cherry on top.

C for Confirm with Biological Tests

  • FeNO (inflammation in exhaled air)
  • Allergy tests (blood or skin)

These studies help personalize treatment and determine the type of asthma, since it is not always allergy-related.

What if my child can’t undergo these tests?
International guidelines also account for this scenario — a trial treatment can be prescribed:

  • An inhaler for 8 to 10 weeks
  • Evaluate improvement during that period

In summary:

  • Recognize the symptoms
  • Confirm obstruction
  • Verify with biological studies (or with a trial treatment)

With these steps, your child can receive a safe diagnosis and effective treatment.
Breathing well is living well.
