BEYOND THE LENS: THE ART OF RESTORING VISION FROM THE RETINA

When we talk about restoring vision, most people think of glasses or cataract surgery. However, as a retina specialist, my work begins where light ends: in the retina. If the eye were a camera, the retina would be the digital sensor; if it fails, no lens—no matter how sophisticated—can project a clear image. Today, we have treatments that a decade ago seemed like science fiction. Here I explain how we are saving both central and peripheral vision for our patients.

The Challenge of the Macula: The Center of Your World

The macula is a tiny area in the center of the retina, responsible for allowing you to read, recognize faces, and drive. When it is damaged by Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) or edema, central vision becomes blurred or distorted.

  • Intravitreal Therapy (Antiangiogenic): This is one of the greatest advances in modern medicine. Through microinjections of specialized medications, we are able to “dry” the accumulated fluid and stop the growth of abnormal blood vessels. It is a quick procedure, performed in-office under local anesthesia, that has prevented blindness in millions of people.

Diabetic Retinopathy: Protecting Tomorrow

In Mexico, diabetes is one of the leading causes of vision loss. Excess sugar damages the small blood vessels of the retina, causing leakage and bleeding.

  • Laser Photocoagulation: We use precise laser technology to “seal” high-risk areas and prevent massive hemorrhages.
  • Microincisional Vitrectomy: In advanced cases where there is blood inside the eye or retinal detachment, we perform this highly complex surgery. Through incisions smaller than a strand of hair, we clean the inside of the eye and repair the retina from within.

The Perfect Synergy: Retina and Intraocular Lens

Many patients ask me: “Dr. Diana, can I get a lens for presbyopia if I have retinal problems?” The answer is yes, as long as we have a stable retina. My approach as a subspecialist is to prepare the “ground”:

  1. We stabilize the retina (with laser or injections).
  2. We choose the ideal intraocular lens: Not all multifocal lenses are suitable for patients with retinal damage. My role is to select the technology that provides the best visual quality without compromising contrast sensitivity.

Technology at the Service of Your Eyes

In my practice in Guadalajara, we use OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography), a high-resolution scan that allows me to see the layers of your retina as if we were under a microscope, but in real time and without pain. This allows us to act before damage becomes irreversible.

Final Reflection: Do not settle for seeing “blurry.” Intraocular lens technology combined with expert retinal management can restore the autonomy you deserve.
