SMILE DESIGN: PLAN BEFORE TRANSFORMING
When we think of smile design, we probably imagine white, straight, symmetrical teeth. However, behind a smile that looks natural and harmonious, there is much more than choosing a color or a veneer. There is a diagnosis, a plan and, above all, a proposal designed for each patient.
Before transforming a smile, it is necessary to understand it.
What is smile design?
It is a process of analysis and planning aimed at designing a harmonious, natural smile, taking into account each patient’s facial, dental and functional characteristics.
To do this, aspects such as the following are analyzed:
* Teeth
* Gums
* Lips
* Facial proportions
* Midline
* Tooth shape and size
* Tooth display
* Smile
* Function and occlusion
Depending on the case, the desired result may be achieved with composite resins, ceramic veneers, crowns, orthodontics, gum contouring or a combination of treatments.
Something very important:
The goal is not to create the same smile for everyone, but to find a smile shape that harmonizes with each patient.
What is it for?
It allows us to:
Visualize
Have a preliminary idea of where the treatment is headed.
Plan
Determine which changes are necessary and which are not.
Personalize
Adapt shape, size, proportions and characteristics to each patient.
Communicate
Facilitate communication among the patient, dentist and laboratory.
Predict
Have a clearer idea of the expected result.
The main objective is to plan before treating.
How is it carried out?
Today, smile design can be performed using analog, digital or combined methods.
For example:
Photographs + models or scanning + facial analysis → design → diagnostic wax-up → mock-up → evaluation in the mouth → adjustments → definitive restoration.
The mock-up is a trial of the design directly in the patient’s mouth. It is one of the most important steps because it allows the patient and dentist to see and evaluate the proposal before the definitive treatment.
At this stage, we can observe:
-The harmony of the smile
-Its relationship with the lips
-How it looks when speaking and smiling
-Whether the tooth length is appropriate
-Whether the patient feels comfortable
-What modifications can be made
Designing a smile does not simply mean deciding what shape or color the teeth will have. It goes far beyond that: it means observing, analyzing, listening and planning before intervening.
The goal is not for every patient to have the same teeth, but to find the shapes, proportions and characteristics that best suit each individual.
Because what works and looks good on a model or on a screen will not necessarily work or look the same on a patient.
“Every face, every smile and every patient is different. That is why, before transforming a smile, we must learn to see it.”
